Whiplash —The Genesis of Many Chronic Headache Issues

Whiplash, Neck Pain, Neck Ache, Back Pain, Back Ache, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, Migraines, accident, car accident, Neck Injury, Neck Trauma, Sports AccidentWhiplash often leads to the onset of chronic headache issues whether the pain first strikes shortly after the injury or even months or years later. Is there a way to know if headaches will follow a head injury? It has to do with looking at the right part of the neck.

Unfortunately, many cases of whiplash go completely undetected or at least under cared for. Why is this the case? Most people don’t realize that an accident at speeds as slow as 5 mph can do damage to the neck. Most people assume if there is no vehicle damage that there is no reason to see a doctor or even exchange insurance information.

The fact is that anytime a person suffers whiplash, even from a mild accident, a misalignment may occur in the C1 and C2 vertebrae. These bones are very different from the rest of the vertebrae and are extremely mobile because they provide the head with more than half its range of motion. This allows a person to move the head side to side or up and down but also makes these bones easily subject to misalignment.

Other Possible Causes of Whiplash Injuries

Of course, a car accident isn’t the only way to get whiplash. There are many other common whiplash causes including:

  • Sports injuries
  • Domestic abuse
  • Bike accidents
  • Falling objects
  • Slip and fall accidents

Help for Whiplash-Related Headaches

When whiplash occurs, it is important to have the upper cervical spine checked regardless of how serious the accident was or whether headaches have set in. An upper cervical chiropractor specializes in this part of the neck and can help you to get ahead of any damaged caused by the injury.

At Scenic City Clinic of Chiropractic, we use the Atlas Orthogonal method of upper cervical chiropractic to provide gentle adjustments for our patients. Unlike the popping and twisting of general chiropractic, instrument-based adjustments are long-lasting and give the body time to heal from damage rather than adding to the inflammation with a sudden jerking motion.
