For some migraine sufferers, once the worst is over, there is still what can be called the “migraine hangover”. This phenomenon, officially referred to as the postdrome phase of a migraine, leaves people feeling exhausted and worn out for hours or sometimes days after the intensity of the migraine has subsided.

Postdrome symptoms commonly include some of the following:

  • Altered cognitive and intellectual function

  • Fatigue

  • Depression and/or anxiety

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Mental fog

  • Skin or scalp sensitivity

Not all migraineurs experience this postdromal phase, but in one referenced study 68% of participants had migraine hangover symptoms that lasted on average 25.2 hours. This period that follows the worst of the migraine episode still has the ability to have the same types of negative ramifications on a person’s social and professional life. There may also be feelings of guilt associated with the inability to immediately be able to get on with their responsibilities.

Thankfully in Chattanooga, migraine sufferers have been finding a lasting solution. Drs. Christi and Todd Osborne, upper cervical chiropractors and migraine specialists, help people to correct the underlying cause to their migraines and headaches. At Scenic City Clinic of Chiropractic, migraine sufferers undergo a very specific exam of the neck to determine the nature of any misalignment present in the top two vertebrae. The proper alignment of two particular vertebrae, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), is critical to maintain normal function of the nervous system. Once the misalignment is analyzed, an adjustment is made only when found to be necessary to allow the body to begin the healing process. Getting checked for upper cervical subluxation is an important step to getting to the bottom of your migraines and their “hangovers”.
