chiropractorFor the approximately 5 million adults in the U.S. suffering with fibromyalgia, managing the pain and other associated symptoms is an important part of day-to-day living. Fibromyalgia can have a profound impact on people’s quality of life due to coping with chronic pain, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems with thinking and memory (sometimes called fibro-fog).1

When a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made, a typical course of treatment will include a combination of medicines and self-care. Medications commonly used to treat fibromyalgia include2:

  • Anti-seizure drugs – Medications used in the treatment of may be prescribed to aid in pain reduction. These include medicines such as Neurontin and Lyrica.

  • Pain relievers – Over-the-counter pain relievers including Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve are sometimes recommended for pain relief. Prescription pain relievers such as tramadol may be used if over-the-counter medications are insufficient.

  • Antidepressants – Antidepressants such as Cymbalta may help to reduce the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. In addition, doctors may prescribe Prozac to help promote sleep.

Self-care methods are also recommended to help reduce stress and target painful areas. Some common methods are2:

  • Get sufficient sleep – Since fatigue is a large component of fibromyalgia, it is necessary to get a sufficient quantity of sleep. Developing good sleep habits, such as going to bed at a consistent time each night and limiting the use of electronics before bedtime contribute to forming health sleep habits.

  • Exercise Regularly – Appropriate exercises include swimming, walking, and cycling on a stationary bike. At first, the pain may worsen, but gradually increasing the amount of exercise can help to lessen the chronic nature of the pain.

  • Stress reduction – Utilizing techniques such as meditation and yoga can help to reduce overall stress. Allowing time for relaxation each day can help with the management of fibromyalgia.

Having a self-care regimen and routine is important and can help fibromyalgia patients maintain a positive outlook. Another critical and often overlooked component to any fibromyalgia care plan is the incorporation of upper cervical chiropractic care. Fibromyalgia experts Drs. Christi and Todd Osborne are helping people all over Chattanooga recover their health and quality of life naturally. They are specifically trained to analyze for interferences in nervous system function that originate from misalignments in the uppermost two bones of the neck. Since the pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia have their origins in the central nervous system, any interference to proper communication of signals between the brain and body must be removed. Once correct alignment is restored and maintained and the nervous system is allowed to function unimpeded, the body is able to start on a course of healing without the harmful side effects of many of the medications routinely given for fibromyalgia treatment.
