Trigeminal Nerve Pain, Trigeminal Nerve, Temporomandibular Jaw PainThe pain of trigeminal neuralgia is unique and hard to understand for those not experiencing it. It is a rare condition, with approximately 15,000 cases diagnosed every year. It is twice as common in women as in men. Some symptoms include:

  • One-sided facial pain (5 times more common on the right)
  • Episodes that last approximately 20 seconds
  • Severe, knife-like, stabbing pain
  • Moving the head, wincing, or grimacing until the pain subsides
  • Anywhere from one episode per day to hundreds per day

Visiting a primary care doctor for relief will more-than-likely have one leaving the office with a prescription in hand. In some cases, surgery is recommended. But more and more people are seeking natural, non-invasive, and long-lasting care. Can this be found?

How Upper Cervical Care Helps Trigeminal Neuralgia

If one of the bones of the upper neck, the C1 or C2 vertebra, happens to misalign, the body can suffer in a variety of ways. This is due, in part, to the location of these bones in relation to the brainstem. These vertebrae have the vital job of protecting the brainstem from harm. However, a car accident, a sports injury, or a simple trip and fall can cause these bones to misalign easily due to their mobility and shape. When they move out of place, they no longer protect the brainstem but put it under stress or pressure. It is then unable to send proper signals to the brain. This is often the underlying cause of trigeminal neuralgia.

A case study demonstrates the effectiveness of correcting the problem in the neck. A 14-year-old girl suffered from trigeminal neuralgia. She began seeing an upper cervical chiropractor. After just one visit she had a total remission of her pain. Following up a year later, she was still symptom-free.

At our Chattanooga, Tennessee practice, we use a gentle method called Atlas Orthogonal to help the bones move back into place. When this takes place, pressure can be removed from not only the brainstem but also the trigeminal nerve in the face. As a result, many patients see benefits right from their first adjustment.
