Nearly everyone these days uses a mobile device. An unexpected condition that is emerging from this fact is what is being labeled as “text neck”, and according to some, it’s becoming an epidemic. It is estimated that we use our mobile devices between 2 and 4 hours per day. With our heads in a forward posture looking down for extended periods of time, it’s no wonder so many of us walk around with neck pain.

Our necks are designed to have c-shaped curve to them. This curve develops early in life, when as a baby we start to raise our heads when laying on our bellies. This curve serves as a shock absorber, and when it’s lost, normal biomechanics of the neck are compromised. Loss of, or a complete reversal of the cervical curve is being seen more and more with increased use of mobile devices. This is a serious issue not only because of the pain it can cause, but because the bones in the neck house the spinal cord, which is responsible for relaying messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

For people with neck pain, over the counter medications are usually the go-to treatment. These may help to provide temporary relief. However, the underlying cause of the pain remains. Changing your mobile device viewing habits, such as elevating the device to eye level can help to prevent further deterioration of the neck, but if damage has already been done, the pain may still persist. In Chattanooga, upper cervical chiropractors Drs. Christi and Todd Osborne work to realign the vertebra of the neck in order to restore both proper structure and proper function. Correct alignment of the cervical spine is a key element in overall health and wellbeing, and lasting relief from neck pain can be obtained without the need for continued medication usage.
