What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica pain is absolutely no joke at all. The pain can be incapacitating for sciatica sufferers. Sciatica is an irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve that begins in the spine and can travel down through the buttocks and into one or both legs. Sitting or standing for long periods of time can result in excruciating pain. Other symptoms of sciatica can include:

  • A burning or tingling feeling down the leg
  • Pain in the hip
  • A shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up
  • Pain that is constant on one side of the buttocks
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain felt in the buttocks or leg that is worse when sitting
  • Weakness and/or numbness
  • Problems moving the leg or foot

Typically, only one side is affected. However, in some cases, pain may be felt on both sides.

How Doctors Care For Sciatica

Often, your primary care physician will begin treatment with an anti-inflammatory drug. Advil is an over-the-counter medicine that can aid in reducing swelling and pain. An additional suggestion would be to consider a steroid shot or muscle relaxers. If there is a tumor irritating the sciatic nerve, surgery may be approved. Recently, though, more and more sciatica patients are seeking out natural treatment methods.

What causes irritation to the sciatic nerve? Any of the following could trigger pain:

  • Arthritis
  • Disc problems in the back
  • Being pregnant
  • Being overweight
  • Cancer
  • Trauma or injury to the muscles
  • Swelling and inflammation

A Natural Way

Here at Scenic City Clinic of Chiropractic, we often find a cause for sciatica through an examination of the upper neck vertebrae. If there is a misalignment, the whole spine will compensate for it, causing problems with your posture. After the misalignment is corrected, the body can begin working as it is supposed to again. This relieves stress on the body, which will lead to better health, resulting in sciatica becoming a thing of the past!
