concussionA concussion is a traumatic injury to the brain that can temporarily or permanently alter the way the brain functions.  Headaches, confusion, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, and feeling off-balance are symptoms that are frequently associated with concussions.  Because a concussion can occur without any loss of consciousness, sometimes people may have a concussion and not realize it, since the signs and symptoms can be subtle.

Playing sports, especially contact sports, is possibly the means most people associate with getting a concussion.  Younger and younger children are becoming involved in competitive sports, so it is extremely important to be aware of the signs children may exhibit following a rough tackle or other form of contact.  There is emerging evidence that people who have sustained multiple concussions over their lifetimes are at an increased risk of developing permanent impairment to their cognitive function.

Especially since developing a concussion usually means that there has been some type of traumatic injury to the head, it is very important to make sure that the alignment of the spine was not compromised as a result of the injury.  A misalignment of the uppermost two vertebrae of the neck by as little as ¼ of an inch can have a significant impact on the body’s ability to heal and function.  Upper cervical specific chiropractors Drs. Todd and Christi Osborne have expertise and specialized training in assessing the alignment of those top two vertebrae.  They use a gentle and very effective technique to not only realign them, but to monitor them to ensure they remain in normal alignment.  Many of the associated concussion symptoms, especially headaches, resolve once normal spinal alignment is restored.
