Migraines — Common Triggers and an Alternative Care Method

However, if you encounter them during your daily activities, you may end up with a migraine. It is often a combination of a few triggers which bring on migraines.

Common Triggers for Migraines

Triggers vary from person to person. What triggers your friend’s migraines may not impact you at all. Here is a list of some common triggers.

  • Hormonal changes in women
  • Certain medications
  • Food — chocolate, salty and processed foods, MSG, aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, and aged cheeses, to name a few
  • Drinks — alcohol (in particular red wine) and too much or too little caffeine
  • Sleep problems — changes in sleep habits, jet lag, or too much or too little sleep

It is a good idea to keep a migraine journal to help you determine what your triggers are. By writing down what you did just before you got a migraine, you may just begin to see a pattern develop. This can help you pinpoint what may be your personal triggers and then avoid them in the future.
