migraines-and-hypertension-is-there-a-connectionIt is common knowledge that chiropractors often help to relieve the pain of migraines. However, did you know they can also help lower your blood pressure? Upper cervical chiropractic care in particular has been seen to do this.

A 25-year-old woman was suffering from both migraines and hypertension, according to the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. She started seeing an upper cervical chiropractor. She had been taking hydrochlorothiazide to care for her migraines. Her blood pressure was 134/98 mm/Hg. Upon examination, it was determined that she did indeed have a misalignment in the bone of the upper cervical spine. She continued chiropractic care for the next 12 weeks. She was visiting her chiropractor two times a week. It was noted that her blood pressure had dropped to 114/98. She also said she was having fewer migraines, and when they did occur, they were much less intense.

Research Shows the Link

A study was performed in Chicago in 2007 according to the Journal of Hypertension. The study was featured on Good Morning America, and WebMD, making it a very popular study. Fifty people were part of the study and were divided into two groups of 25 each. During an 8-week period, one group had upper cervical adjustments while the other had an intentionally ineffective chiropractic procedure. The results? Those who had an actual upper cervical adjustment saw a marked decrease in their blood pressure and migraines. The other group’s blood pressure remained where it was.

The Upper Cervical Connection

If you have a misaligned atlas or axis (the C1 or C2 vertebra) you may find yourself suffering from migraines and high blood pressure. This is because the brainstem is negatively affected. It is located in the same general region of these bones. A misalignment in this area stresses the brainstem and causes it to send improper signals to the brain. Once corrected using our gentle method, the body can begin to heal itself and you will probably see a decrease in blood pressure and an increase in migraine-free days.
