A case study of a 25-year-old woman was reported on in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. She experienced both hypertension and migraines. Hydrochlorothiazide was prescribed for her high blood pressure. Unfortunately, the medication comes with a long list of side effects including headaches, nose bleeds, fever, joint pain, and indigestion (to name a few). The young woman decided to turn to upper cervical chiropractic care.

After examining her x-rays, it was determined that she had a misalignment of the C1 and C2. She had an adjustment and then her condition was again reassessed. The assessment was done using the following methods.

  • Postural assessment
  • Paraspinal thermography
  • Supine leg length assessment
  • Blood pressure measurement

Just short of three months later, the woman reported fewer and less severe migraines and greatly reduced blood pressure.

How Upper Cervical Alignment Affects Blood Pressure

The human head weighs on average 10-12 pounds. It is precariously balanced on bones and soft tissue. If the uppermost vertebrae in the neck shift out of alignment—which can go undetected as there may not be any noticeable signs—it can create changes in blood flow patterns and interrupt blood pressure changes. Other conditions and symptoms can develop as well. This is because the C1 and C2, if misaligned, can put pressure on the brainstem and a number of vascular structures, including arteries.

Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to detect this specific misalignment and return the vertebrae to their natural positions. A consultation can help determine if the upper vertebrae are out of alignment and whether an adjustment is needed. Relief may be realized even after just one adjustment. See if this natural solution to hypertension or other conditions is what you have been searching for by scheduling a consultation.
