Children with Migraines in Chattanooga

migraine_little_girlIt is well known how debilitating migraines can be.  Migraine sufferers must cope with not only the pain, but also the loss of productivity and quality of life that can accompany their headaches.  While it may be easy for adults to communicate their condition to others, it is important to know that children and adolescents can also suffer from migraines.  In fact, if one parent suffers from migraine, there is a 40% chance their child will also suffer; if both parents suffer, the odds increase to 90%.It is important to know the symptoms and warning signs  of migraines in children, and equally as important to learn how to correct the cause of their suffering in a natural manner.

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, half of all migraine sufferers experience their first episode prior to the age of 12.  Before reaching puberty, boys experience migraines more frequently than girls.  This quickly shifts after adolescence, with the incidence in girls exceeding boys, likely due to changing levels of estrogen and other hormones.  It is believed that approximately 60% of people who suffered from migraines as children will continue to have attacks past age 30.1

An increasing number of migraine sufferers are turning to upper cervical chiropractic care for help.  Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in correcting misalignments of the uppermost vertebrae of the spine, C1 (atlas), and C2 (axis).  If a child has a misalignment, or subluxation, in the upper cervical region it can be compromising the function of the nervous system and contributing to the underlying cause of their migraines.2  It is crucial to have children, especially those who are displaying signs and symptoms of migraine attacks, checked for upper cervical subluxation.  Chattanooga migraine specialists Drs. Christi and Todd Osborne are specifically trained to analyze for and correct upper cervical subluxations in patients of all ages.  Once proper alignment and function is restored with an upper cervical specific adjustment, kids who suffer with migraines can go back to being just kids.
