fatigue5Fibromyalgia affects approximately 5.8 million people across the US. It is a syndrome that impacts the soft tissues and muscle, causing painful tender points, fatigue, and chronic muscle pain.  Fibromyalgia sufferers can also experience what is known as “fibro fog,” which is characterized by difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and a general feeling of diminished mental clarity.  Diagnosing fibromyalgia can be tough, and it can often be misdiagnosed.

When it comes to treatments for fibromyalgia, most are aimed at reducing the pain and the fatigue.  Medications are often prescribed for pain, fatigue, depression, and anxiety.  Physical therapy may be recommended to help manage the muscular and soft tissue symptoms.  Regular, gentle exercise such as walking may also help to minimize pain and help with the fatigue.

Because a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is still a bit of a mystery, it is important that any treatment route a person might choose gets at the underlying cause of the problem.  Several theories about the cause of fibromyalgia exist – from hormonal disturbances to genetics, to stress levels.  Others have proposed that low levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, cause an increased sensitivity to pain signals.

One thing that connects all of these possible causes of fibromyalgia is the nervous system that governs the function of our bodies including hormone production, pain sensation, and the sleep-wake cycle.  In Chattanooga, Drs. Todd and Christi Osborne understand this connection and work with their patients to optimize the function of the nervous system.

As upper cervical chiropractors, they do this by performing a specific analysis of the uppermost vertebrae in the neck to check for any misalignments that can be interrupting normal brain-body communication.  If a misalignment is detected, gentle adjustments are given to restore both normal alignment and function.  Over time, the body is allowed to heal, and fibromyalgia sufferers may find some relief naturally, without the use of medications.
