gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD, heartburn, throat, stomach, lower esophageal sphincter, LES, smoking, weight, stomach acid, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, scarring, cancer, endoscopy, upper GIIt seems odd to think about a baby suffering from acid reflux; however, it is more common that one may think. A report from Tele-Management (an online television website) stated that the problem lies with the lower esophageal sphincter. If this part of the body has not developed or is not working properly, acid reflux is the end result. If an infant vomits within the first four months, he or she is more-than-likely suffering from acid reflux. This is true even if the baby is otherwise healthy.

What is the Best Course of Care for Babies with Acid Reflux?

Generally, the first thing a medical doctor will recommend for GERD (acid reflux) is medication to control the acid. Pediatrics, a medical journal, reports that Dr. Eric Hassel believes this type of medication is over prescribed with little or no success. So, this may cause parents to wonder where to find the proper type of care for their baby.

Upper Cervical Chiropractors and Acid Reflux

It has been observed that acid reflux in babies is often connected to a misalignment of the bones of the upper neck. This could have occurred during a minor trauma at birth. Dr. Godfrey Gutmann—a doctor from Germany who has been researching this topic since the 1960s—published a list of conditions that are linked to upper vertebrae misalignments. These include:

  • Torticollis
  • Scoliosis
  • Colic
  • Ear infections
  • Acid reflux

During his research, he examined over 1,000 babies and found that 80% of them did indeed have an upper cervical misalignment, typically resulting from trauma at birth.

At Scenic City Clinic of Chiropractic, we have been specifically trained to realign these bones without resorting to popping or twisting. The method we use is extremely gentle and safe for those of any age.  Once this misalignment is corrected, babies often feel happier and healthier.
